Turner made dozens of pencil studies of works of art and antiquities in Rome, particularly in the Vatican and Capitoline Museums, as well as other collections throughout the city. This page contains several sketches of sculptural and architectural fragments although the source is currently unidentified.
At the bottom of the sheet is an inverted landscape sketch of an unidentified landmark. It appears to depict a square-shaped ruin with distant mountains.
