Catalogue entry

This page contains a sketch of a fragment of antique sculpture, possibly part of an entablature. The identity of the piece or the location where Turner saw it has not yet been identified although it may be part of a ruin from the Roman Forum. Alternatively, it might represent part of Turner’s exploration of the Capitoline or Vatican Museums in Rome, contained principally within the Vatican Fragments sketchbook (Turner Bequest; CLXXX). See also folios 22 verso, 67 verso and 69 verso (D15350, D15423 and D15428; Turner Bequest CLXXXII 66a and 68a).
