For Turner’s views of Grindelwald in this sketchbook, see especially folio19 (D04674), and for the village and Turner’s work there, the Rhine, Strassburg, Oxford sketchbook, especially folio 29 (Tate D04768; Turner Bequest LXXVII 29). David Hill notes this as Turner’s ‘first sketch of his first encounter’ with the surrounding mountainscape. He also notes that the viewpoint is from near the present Firstbahn station. The Wetterhorn rises behind the village church.
