Turner Bequest CCCLII 16
Display caption
Turner continued his journey up the Neckar to Heilbronn, appoximately fifty miles from Heidelberg. The two church towers at the centre of the composition are those of St Kilian's on the left, and the Roman Catholic Church on the right, formerly the Church of the Teutonic Order. Turner indicates the spiral staircase on the tower of St Kilian's with two parallel snaking pencil lines. The crenellated tower to the right of the picture is the Götzturm, part of a medieval defensive wall. Heilbronn is now much changed, owing to heavy war damage.
