Inscribed by Turner in pen and brown ink ‘The Ruins of the Tower of’ towards top centre and ‘the Ruins of the Tower | at the West End of Malmbury [sic] Abbey | taken from the Friars Walk | 1791’ centre
Stamped in black ink with Turner Bequest monogram above ‘VII D’ bottom left
Inscribed in pencil in a later hand, in pencil ‘4’ (circled) towards lower right
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
This side of this sheet is not mentioned specifically in Finberg’s 1909 Turner Bequest catalogue,1 although he gives Turner’s longer inscription as the title of the subject on the recto (D00111; Turner Bequest VII D).
