Catalogue entry

This sketch shows the same material, from the opposite direction, as another sheet from this sketchbook, also formerly known as a scene ‘In Savoy’ but identifiable as Lake Brienz with Ringgenberg Castle (D04647; Turner Bequest LXXV 55: see catalogue notes). The tonal effects here suggest twilight, with moonlight reflected on the lake’s surface, a recollection of what Turner had seen after a long day’s boat trip.
