This is one of the sequence of pencil studies that Turner made in the streets of Oxford, presumably about the time he was commencing work on the Oxford Almanack commission (see the Introduction to this subsection). Buildings in the right foreground are recorded as a separate sketch at right angles at the top corner.

Blank; a grey paint spot; inscribed by a later hand in pencil ‘15’; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram.
