Catalogue entry

Made with the page turned horizontally, this rapid and incomplete study is perhaps derived from the elaborate pencil drawing of Caernarvon in the 1798 Hereford Court sketchbook (Tate D01348; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 94); there are also slight pencil studies of the walls of the castle from much the same viewpoint in the 1799 Lancashire and North Wales sketchbook (Tate D01947, D01949, D01951; Turner Bequest XLV 24a, 25a, 26a).
Technical notes:
There is some white gouache offset from folio 43 verso (D01862; Turner Bequest XLIII 42a).
