This colour study shows the Norman castle at Richmond in Yorkshire, and
the bridge over the River Swale.

 

Turner visited Richmond in 1816. However, he had sketched the same view nineteen years earlier, when he visited the town
in 1797, so this study may have been made by referring to his old sketchbook. Turner often developed watercolours
from sketches made years earlier. This study was not carried any further and
no completed watercolour of Richmond was made from it.
