This is the right half of a double-page spread of St Mary’s Abbey, York, continued from folio 24 verso (D10913), opposite. The view is taken from outside the south aisle, looking to the inside of the west end and north wall of the nave. Turner sketched the same aspect of St Mary’s from a slightly more distant viewpoint in a succeeding sketch, folio 28 verso (D10920), and the exterior of the west end in the Yorkshire 3 sketchbook (Tate D11378; Turner Bequest CXLVI 5).
