There are two sketches of Margate on this leaf, above a general view towards Fort Hill with Hooper’s Mill on the right and the beach, pier and net stores in the foreground, and below a detail of a wooden structure probably used for drying nets and sails. As first observed by Andrew Wilton to Butlin and Joll, these relate to the unfinished oil known as Margate, Setting Sun (Tate N02700)1 which is of a similar view and has the same structure prominent in the left foreground. Eric Shanes points out that in fact the picture depicts dawn.2
