This unfinished work seems to show a Venetian scene involving clusters of gondolas and other boats. The canvas is of one of Turner's standard exhibition sizes in use for most of his career. However, this painting seems to date from the mid-1840s, by which time he was experimenting with different formats for his exhibited Venetian subjects. This new preference may account for his having abandoned the picture.
