Catalogue entry

Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the composition continues across folio 47 recto opposite (D01212; Turner Bequest XXXVII 95). The present author proposed that this shows the Lilburn Tower of Dunstanburgh Castle, Northumberland, which Turner saw on his northern tour of summer 1797;1 this identification was followed by Ian Warrell.2 See the watercolour view in the North of England sketchbook (Tate D00954; Turner Bequest XXXIV 46a).
