At this stage the engraver has nearly finished the plate and has printed the image for final correction by Turner. This 'touched proof' would then be sent back to Cooke to carry out the improvements. Close inspection of the print will show the artist's adjustments. White chalk around the rocks in the background indicates Turner's desire for spray. There have also been alterations in brown ink to the rigging of the boat and the addition of
a second seagull in the lower foreground, physically scratched out of the paper.
