Display caption
A shaft of moonlight illuminates a sculpture by John Flaxman. The sculpture had only been completed in 1826, the year before Turner made this atmospheric study. The North Gallery seen here was itself a new addition to Petworth, built to house Lord Egremont’s growing collection of contemporary British art.
