In August 1825 Turner began a journey through the Low Countries visiting Rotterdam, Delft, The Hague, Leyden, Amsterdam and Utrecht before travelling on to Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges and Ostend, via Cologne. This view of the old harbour at Rotterdam shows both the Ooster and the Wester Oude Hoofdpoorts. Although Turner had already made a detailed pencil sketch of the Ooster Hoofdpoort in 1817, he is meticulous in his observation here, even noting the 'lions heads' on the roof of the building.
