Turner visited Lake Windermere ('Winandermere' was the name used
for the lake in the eighteenth century)
on his tour of the Lake District in 1797.
He used studies from the sketchbook
of that tour in creating this image although much of the real topographical detail is ignored. Lake Winandermere shows Turner idealising the landscape according to his artistic requirements.
The distant mountains are enlarged beyond their real scale which together with the magnificent sunset lends
a rather Alpine look to the scene.
