The artist recalled in an interview on 7 September 1981 that the portrait was painted in about 1927 in his studio in Grosvenor Road, Pimlico. He first met the policeman while he was trying to break into his own studio, having forgotten his keys, and they remained friends for some years. The map on the wall and the objects on the table were arranged specifically for this portrait. No early exhibitions have so far been identified for the portrait, though the artist recalled that it was shown a number of times.
