This is the right half of a double-page spread continued from folio 49 verso (D10958) opposite, recording the view from a position to the north-west of Middleham, near Middleham Bridge, looking along the River Ure to Middleham Church and Castle. It was probably taken from the same viewpoint as the previous double-page spread, folios 48 verso–49 (D10956–D10957), but looking in the opposite direction. A similar view taken on the same occasion, from a closer viewpoint slightly further to the right, is in the Yorkshire 3 sketchbook (Tate D11403–D11404; Turner Bequest CXLVI 22a–23). Turner’s friend Thomas Girtin drew a similar subject about 1800 in the Shepherd sketchbook (Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester).
