Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Along with his inscription, Turner has added a small pencil sketch of the deck of the ship seen as if from above, to indicate her wide beam. See note to folio 10 of this sketchbook (D05404; Turner Bequest LXXXVII 29) and folio 12 (D05400; Turner Bequest LXXXVII 25) for a ‘French Frig[ate]’; also folio 28 (D05420; Turner Bequest LXXXVII 45) for another ‘FF [?French frigate]. Turner may have seen captured French ships on the Thames.
