Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Turner made a number of sketches of Lake Nemi, a volcanic crater lake amidst the Albano Hills which he passed en route between Rome and Naples. This drawing depicts part of a view from the north-west looking across the lake towards the town of Nemi and the circular medieval tower of Castello Ruspoli. The composition continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread with the town of Genzano, see folio 8 (D15569). A similar vista can be seen in the Albano, Nemi, Rome sketchbook (Tate D15330; Turner Bequest CLXXXII 19a). For other related studies and a discussion of Lake Nemi see folio 7 (D15567).
