The pencil sketch continues on folio 55 verso (D06829). The list of works is as follows:
4 Proofs of Liber Studiorum
Mill. Sketch                         Per Contra
1 Mill. Drawing                      C Draft. Feb.20. £100
2 Bardon Tower
3 Farnley
4 Gordale
5 Rocks
7 Weathercote
8 Geneva
9 Bolton
10 Thun
For the titled works, all watercolours, see the longer list on folio 53 (D06824). If this ‘Bolton’ is Bolton Abbey from the North (British Museum, London), its date of 1809 is a clue to the likely date of Fawkes’s payment recorded here. If executed in the winter following Turner’s visit to Yorkshire and Farnley Hall in 1808 payment might have been put through in February 1809. If on the other hand the work dates from later that year and resulted from a summer visit to Farnley proposed elsewhere in this catalogue, the payment would fall in February 1810. ‘Fawkes note 20 Feby’ is also recorded in the Finance sketchbook (Tate D08294; CXXII 7a).
