This page contains several distinct sketches of mountainous landscape which according to an inscription by the artist, relate to the Pass of Mont Cenis in the Cottian Alps. The largest view utilises the vertical height of the sheet in order to capture the vast scale of the peaks rising above a bridge in the foreground. The details at the bottom of the page meanwhile are part of the composition which has spilled over from the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 61 verso (D14089).
For a general discussion of Turner’s passage through the Alps see the Introduction to the sketchbook.
