The sketches on this page appear to depict details of relief fragments from classical sculpture, including part of a frieze with a bucranium motif (ox-head), and a sarcophagus decorated with a strigil (wave-like) pattern. The source is unidentified but Turner made numerous studies of a similar nature in Rome, particularly within the Vatican Fragments sketchbook (Tate; Turner Bequest CLXXX).
