For historical studies in this sketchbook see Introduction and notes to folio 95 verso (D11023). This example provided the basis of the painting The Decline of the Carthaginian Empire (Tate N00499),1 which Turner exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1817. It is interesting to find Turner planning ahead to his next major Academic statement, whilst in the midst of one of his most exercising topographical projects. It is possible that he discussed his forthcoming project with Walter Fawkes whilst in Yorkshire in 1816.
