This is one of two composition studies in this sketchbook for View of Richmond Hill and Bridge exhibited at Turner’s Gallery in 1808 (Tate N00557).1 The other, seen from rather nearer, is on folio 37 verso (D05831). The present version is followed more closely in the picture but, as Hill notes, Turner omitted some of the foreground activity seen in the drawing. A related figure sketch is on folio 38 (D05832).
