For Turner’s visit to Tabley in 1808, see Introduction to the sketchbook. This drawing, made entirely in ink, served as the basis for Tabley, Cheshire, the Seat of Sir J.F. Leicester, Bart.: Windy Day (Tabley House Collection, University of Manchester)1 painted for Sir John Leicester and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1809. As in other drawings in this sketchbook (see notes to folio 9, D06990; Turner Bequest CV 7) Turner included the water tower in the Moat that he had omitted from drawings and an oil sketch in the Tabley No.1 sketchbook ((Tate D06845–D06846, D06848; Turner Bequest CIII 15a–16, 18). Having probably at first thought it unpicturesque, he may have been instructed to include it by Sir John, who had had it built. Also present in drawing and picture are several of the yachts that Sir John kept for ‘aquatic parties’.
