This is one of a group of watercolour studies of Thames scenery that occupy some of the later folios of the sketchbook; see chiefly 38 verso (D05833) and Introduction to the book for comment. Listed by Finberg as folio 11, this leaf was restored to the book in its proper position as folio 41, the image now appearing on the verso. Blue wash from the sky extends on to folio 42 (D05839), which also shows offsets of green from the trees.
Hill adds to Finberg’s title, noting the presence of Robert Mylne’s Pavilion on the right, Syon House in the trees and the ferry on the river and comparing the pencil sketch of a similar view in the Studies for Pictures: Isleworth sketchbook (Tate D05602; Turner Bequest XC 72a).
The watercolour is faded from exposure.
