Turner Bequest LVIII 43
Chalk, wash and gouache on white wove paper, 378 x 551 mm
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Hitherto regarded as one of the ‘Scottish Pencils’ of 1801 (Tate; Turner Bequest LVIII), this sheet differs from those in dimensions, style and technique; it is worked in black chalk and stump with a little grey wash and white gouache. The drawing appears to be earlier, and may well represent the subject recorded in the 1798 North Wales sketchbook (Tate D01372; Turner Bequest XXXIX 17). The subject was worked up in colour, though not taken to a finished state, on a larger sheet (Tate D01115; Turner Bequest XXXVI U).
