Walter Sickert wrote to Ethel Sands in 1914: ‘I shall probably come into Dieppe every Saturday. To study my arcade café picture’ (TGA 9125/5, no.103). In this drawing Sickert has studied flag bunting hanging from a ceiling. Partly obscured by the flags are the words ‘CA[F]E [S]UISSE’. This study was most probably used as a reference for the painting, Café des Arcades or Café Suisse 1914 (private collection), which includes flags hanging from the ceiling. Related drawings held in Tate Archive are the following: TGA 8120/3/1, TGA 8120/3/11, TGA 8120/3/12, TGA 8120/3/14, TGA 8120/3/15, TGA 8120/3/16 and TGA 8120/3/29.
