The subject, a pair of graceful trees, is continued on folio 2 (D05847), forming an upright composition. Hill compares the trees in the unfinished oil The Thames Glimpsed between Trees, Possibly at Kew Bridge (Tate N05519) dated about 1806–7 by Martin Butlin and Evelyn Joll.1 Both the drawing and the oil were probably done from nature and, while not directly related, show Turner focusing on naturalistic treatments of landscape features in his work beside the Thames.
