Edward Croft-Murray was the first to recognise this subject as Guildford in a pencil annotation to a copy of Finberg in Tate’s Library. This is confirmed by Hill who locates the viewpoint as from near St Catherine’s Ferry, and observes that shadows indicate that the ‘sun is in the east, about 9 or 10 a.m.’
