Joseph Mallord William Turner The View from Windsor Castle, North Terrace, Looking West, The Brocas to the Right, Clewer Church in the Distance, Right Centre 1805

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 126 Recto:
The View from Windsor Castle, North Terrace, Looking West, The Brocas to the Right, Clewer Church in the Distance, Right Centre 1805
D06337
Turner Bequest XCVIII 126
Pencil on white laid paper, 182 x 117 mm
Inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘126’ top left, inverted
Stamped in black ‘XCVIII 126’ top left, inverted

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Drawn with the sketchbook inverted, and continued to the right on folio 125 verso (D06336), for which see catalogue note. Hill reproduces this double spread as if continued across folios 128–127 verso and the verso of the present leaf (D06341–D06340, D06338) to form a continuous panorama from the North Terrace. This configuration is impossible in reality and Turner must have drawn these sections separately.
