Drawn with the sketchbook inverted, and continued to the left on folio 134 (D06353). The view is up-river, from near Romney Lock. Turner used it as the basis of Near the Thames Lock, Windsor (Tate T03877; displayed at Petworth House),1 exhibited at Turner’s Gallery, 1809, and bought by the Earl of Egremont. In the picture, the trees are reduced in height, the view closed off somewhat on the left, the Winchester Tower made more prominent and Eton scholars added to the foreground, bathing in the Thames and resting on its bank.
