This is one of three very lively, closely-observed sketches of ships being provisioned; the others are a double-spread running from the verso to folio 22 (D06388–D06389; Turner Bequest XCIX 18a–19, and folio 25; Turner Bequest XCIX 22) which has a further inscription detailing the supplies of bread, straw, beef, live sheep and fish. The Navy’s main victualling yards were on the Thames at Deptford and the drawings were probably made there.
