See note to folio 35 recto (D06411; Turner Bequest XCIX 31) for further comment on the relationship to The Confluence of the Thames and the Medway (Tate T03874; displayed at Petworth House) exhibited at Turner’s Gallery in 18081 and possibly earlier. The large sailing barge in this sketch was used for the picture together with the two men-of-war at anchor in folio 35.
