Drawn with the sketchbook inverted. The Nore lightship was the first in the world, originally moored in 1732 by the treacherous Nore sandbank, at the mouth of the Thames Estuary, between Shoebury Ness in Essex and Sheerness and the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. A sloop, with a lantern hung at each end of the yard-arm, the lightship had been taken over by Trinity House in 1793; the vessel was replaced in 1845.
