This is one of two views of Winchelsea in this sketchbook used for subjects for the Liber Studiorum; the other is on folio 6 (D05763; Turner Bequest XCII 44). Gillian Forrester suggests that Turner planned these as a pair, and in the present case he added a military presence to the foreground and gave the working title of ‘Soldiers’ to his design for the Liber plate (Tate D08145; Turner Bequest CXVII Q). See notes to D05763 for the location of Turner’s viewpoints. The Liber plate of this subject, simple entitled ‘Winchelsea, Sussex’, was published in 1812.

Finberg recorded that this was one of four leaves from the sketchbook ‘found loose’. The paper has a vertical crease right of centre.
