For views around Hastings in this book, see Introduction. Butlin and Joll draw attention to this one as possibly related to Turner’s picture Fishmarket on the Sands (William Rockhill Nelson Gallery and Atkins Museum of Fine Arts, Kansas City, Missouri)1 sold to John Fuller from Turner’s Gallery in 1810. However as they admit, this connection is not certain. The picture may not be of Hastings at all and predates the sketches here if they were made in summer 1810 when Turner visited East Sussex to make views for John Fuller.
