Brougham Castle, begun in the thirteenth century, stands beside the River Eamont just north of Penrith. The ruins are in the care of English Heritage. Together with a view of Yanwath Hall, south of Penrith at Eamont Bridge, on folio 71 verso (D10316; Turner Bequest CXXVII 72), Turner drew it in 1809 when he visited Lowther Castle near Penrith as part of a Cumbrian tour. Another equally careful and detailed drawing of the castle was also associated with this sketchbook by Finberg and is now bound in it as folio 73 verso (D10315; Turner Bequest CXXXVII 71). Turner later combined them as the basis for his watercolour Brougham Castle, near the Junction of the Rivers Eamont and Lowther (Tate D18147; Turner Bequest CCVIII N), engraved by William Say in 1825 for The Rivers of England.
