Perhaps a right-hand page of the sketchbook, as there are stitch holes on the left.
The watercolour of Pevensey Castle based on this drawing (private collection)1 is the same size as those aquatinted by Joseph Stadler as Four Large Coloured Views in Sussex for publication circa 18182 which originated in drawings made in 1810. That it was neither included with Coloured Views nor engraved by William Bernard Cooke for Views in Sussex 1816–20 would be explained if Eric Shanes is correct in dating it perhaps as late as 1823 and suggesting that it might have been the last work that Turner made for John Fuller.3 Shanes notes Fuller’s ‘esteem’ for the ruins of the castle, which are about ten miles from his estate at Rosehill (now Brightling) Park.
