Turner’s inscription reads ‘Richmond Hill | Coast from Hastings to Margate’. This was probably written in the 1820s when Turner began a systematic labelling of his sketchbooks. See Introduction to the sketchbook for its contents, and the fact that the subjects generally run from the back.
