For Saltwood Castle in this sketchbook see notes to folio 43 verso (D10481; Turner Bequest CXL 37a). This is a close view of the ruined Barbican Gate which spans the castle moat and takes the driveway from what is now Castle Road slightly to the west. There is no cottage visible here but Turner’s inscription might refer to the building seen in the view from Castle Road on folio 46 (D10486; Turner Bequest CXL 40).
