The building on the left is Winchelsea’s former workhouse, now Strand House. To its right, faintly outlined, is the Bridge Inn. Beyond is Strand Hill leading into Winchelsea through the Strand Gate. These appear in the distance in Turner’s watercolour Winchelsea, Sussex, and the Military Canal (private collection)1 based mainly on the sketch taken from the Royal Military Road from Rye on folio 62 verso of this sketchbook (D10517; Turner Bequest CXL 55a; see catalogue notes for further comment). Turner must have referred to both sketches for the watercolour, to which he added a coach and soldiers which partly obscure the buildings shown here.
