For Windsor Castle in this sketchbook and a connection with Turner’s watercolour (British Museum, London)1 made in the late 1820s for Picturesque Views in England and Wales, see note to folio 9 verso (D10427).
Turner’s inscriptions read: ‘2 Southampton Ter[race]’ and ‘Mr Duval 2 Clonmel/Clarence | Pl Ter’ right, descending vertically, ‘Westall 150’ right of centre, descending vertically. The last name is presumably that of the artist William Westall (1781–1850) who joined with Turner in the syndicate of shareholders for Picturesque Views on the Southern Coast of England.2 Turner owned a Descent from the Cross by Westall’s half-brother Richard (1765–1836).
There is also some arithmetic. At left, running vertically:
1      10
        1     6

        1
        2     6
2      15     0
At right, descending vertically:
 75
 25
100

 98v
 40
130
There are also separate numbers, ‘2’, ‘7’ and ‘6’. There is more arithmetic facing on folio 91 (D10574; Turner Bequest CXL 83).
