Drawn with the sketchbook inverted. Although a very quick outline, this can be confirmed as Richmond Bridge, and the same view, as Andrew Wilton observes, as in Turner’s watercolour (British Museum, London)1 engraved by W.R. Smith in 1832 for Picturesque Views in England and Wales. Other drawings connected with the watercolour are in the contemporary Richmond Hill; Hastings to Margate sketchbook (Tate D10445–D10447; Turner Bequest CXL 19–20).
