From the four sketches that precede it in this sketchbook (folios 11 verso–13; D13342–D13345; CLXV 11a–13), this slight sketch would appear to be of Bass Rock. Here Turner has depicted with a few simple lines only the northernmost half of the rock, with a hint of other, smaller rocks in the sea nearby. The missing half of the island may be drawn on the following page (D13347; CLXV 14).
