This sketch of Crichton Castle is one of a series of distant views from the north in the Scotch Antiquities sketchbook (see folio 86; D13728; CLXVII 78 for more information). Having sketched the centre in detail from up close on folio 86, Turner could now save time by simply sketching the outline of the castle and concentrating on representing the surrounding landscape. Again his approach is economic, concentrating on outline, while suggesting areas of foliage with rapid serrated lines.
