From three or four hundred yards to the south-west this study looks north-east along a bend in the Thames towards Waterloo Bridge with Somerset House at the left and St Paul’s Cathedral in the distance at the right. The foreground is crowded with boats, one of which contains a figure holding a paddle or spar. The sketch was made with brown watercolour wash and pencil, with the bridge and Somerset House marked in pencil, but the boats and sky painted in wash. There are further sketches around Waterloo Bridge on folios 6–9 (D13820–D13823; CLXX 5–8).
