Cecilia Powell has identified the location of this sketch as Marino, one of the towns which make up the Castelli Romani, sixteen communes situated in the Alban Hills.1 Turner has drawn the view looking across the hilltop town towards the Lake of Albano in the distance. The most recognisable landmarks are the campanile and cupola of the Church of San Barnaba to the left of the centre.
A similar view may be that of the distant prospect of Lake Albano on the opposite page, see folio 11 verso (D15316).
